When I ask people what they want to see in our schools, the answers are remarkably consistent: warm, inviting schools close to home where the classroom environment is conducive to learning, teachers are valued and supported, safety is prioritized, interesting electives are available (art, music, theater, shop) and there are ample sports opportunities, all in addition to strong academics.
"Hannah Amoroso, a physical therapist with two children currently attending district schools, announced months back that she is running to replace Gaudet to represent District 7. Amoroso is best known for her work pressing for new school start times. She points to her years of experience dealing with the district.
“Through these experiences, I’ve seen both the strengths of our schools and the real challenges they face,” Amoroso said.
The Advocate, Jul 27, 2026

Amoroso described herself as a first-time candidate who has spent the campaign visiting neighborhoods and speaking directly with residents. She said those conversations have given her a broader perspective because not every family in District 7 uses public schools.
She said public schools still affect the entire community through factors including neighborhoods and property values.
Amoroso said her long-term goal is to help create a public school system that families across Baton Rouge view as a strong option for educating their children.
Start School Later

We can improve the economy, test scores, grades, graduation rates and health outcomes all while decreasing tardiness, truancy, teen anxiety, depression, car accidents, sports related injuries and teen caffeine use with one single change.
The change is a later start to the school day for teenagers. The improvements are the most significant for the lowest-performing students. The American Academy of Pediatrics and a wide and growing body of research agree that schools need to start later.
